Court challenge of Texada coal plan on this week

A group opposed to plans to ship US coal to Asia through Fraser Surrey Docks is challenging a key part of the project in court this week.

A lawyer for Voters Taking Action asking the BC Supreme Court to overturn the Ministry of Mines’ decision to approve the expansion of Texada Island coal port.

VTACC Director Kevin Washbrook says that should have been up to the Ministry of Environment, since the facility isn’t a mine.

And he says the future of the entire project depends on the Texada coal port.
The proposal would see 4 million tonnes of coal handled on Texada within the first two years.
Another group opposed to the coal shipping plan – The Salish Sea Coal Committee – is holding a forum Saturday in Sechelt.
