Plane crash near Nanaimo still under investigation by TSB

A plane crash at Cottonwood Golf Course on Saturday night that killed two men is still under investigation. The small Avid amphibian nosedived into the 14th fairway shortly after taking off from the Nanaimo Airport is Cassidy around 7:00pm.

The victims have been identified as 73 year-old Michael Weir of Salt Spring Island and 50 year-old Gerald Thom of Youbou. They built the aircraft together from a kit.

Bill Yearwood from the Transportation Safety Board says technical investigators are examining the wreckage to determine whether malfunctioning equipment caused the crash.

Yearwood says they’ll try to figure out whether the aircraft stalled or something else contributed to the loss of control. The wreckage is being stored at the Nanaimo Airport. The BC Coroners Service is also investigating.

Yearwood says the number of plane crashes so far this year across Canada is significantly lower compared to other years.
