Affordable housing projects in Sechelt and Nanaimo get the thumbs up

Funding has been announced for the first of more than 14,000 new affordable rental homes in B.C. where the proponents are non-profits and co-ops.

In Sechelt, the Sunshine Coast Lions Society will get 10 point 4 million dollars to build 104 homes for seniors.

In Nanaimo, three projects were approved.

They include 3 point 6 million dollars to the Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society for 36 homes for families and seniors, 2 point 3 million dollars to Vancouver Island Mental Health for 23 homes for people with mental
health and addiction challenges and 6 point 2 million dollars for 62 homes for seniors as proposed by Woodgrove Senior Citizens Housing.

Jill Atkey, CEO, BC Non-Profit Housing Association said what’s also critical is that the non-profit organization, housing co-op or municipal housing provider will be responsible for the operations of the homes.

“That these investments are coming into the community housing sector through non-profits and co-ops right across B.C. is critical, because what’s affordable in the sector today, remains affordable for generations to come.”

The money is coming from the Province’s new Building BC Community Housing Fund which will invest one point 9 billion dollars over the next decade.

4,900 homes throughout the province are the first to be approved and were selected based on the impact the project will have on the community.
