Refund coming to some Sechelt ratepayers after overcharging error

The District of Sechelt is going to refund nearly 600 thousand dollars in parcel taxes it’s been collecting by mistake, in some cases for more than a decade.

The error involves a levy charged to property owners on Cowrie Street to pay for improvements and sewer levies in West Sechelt and Porpoise Bay.

It was discovered as a part of a recent review.

And Mayor Bruce Milne is crediting the District’s Finance Department.

A council committee took the first step in authorizing the repayments at a committee meeting Wednesday.

“Staff are preparing to have letters to owners of impacted properties distributed by the end of April,” says the District’s Chief Financial Officer, Victor Mema.

Finance Department staff are also going to try to track down previous owners of all the properties involved.
