Interest-free loans help owners install energy-efficient systems

Nanaimo residents can soon apply for the second intake of the city’s financing program for home energy retrofits.

The Home Energy Retrofit Financing Program offers interest-free financing for homeowners who want to install energy-efficient upgrades.

“Saving money on home energy bills, improving home comfort and reducing residential greenhouse gas emissions sounds like a win-win situation for everyone,” says Mayor Leonard Krog. “The Home Energy Retrofit Financing program can help Nanaimo homeowners afford to install a heat pump, solar panels, or make their home more draft proof without having to worry about paying interest on a loan.”

The program supported 14 projects in its first intake. The second intake will provide up to $15,000 per homeowner, with loans repaid through an additional charge on property tax bills.

Applications will be accepted from Sept. 14 to Oct. 31.

The city says priority will be given based on income and equity, energy savings and the climate and resiliency impact of the retrofit.

A free information session on Sept. 14 at 12:30 p.m. will provide more information for interested homeowners. Anyone who wants to register can email sustainability@nanaimo.ca.
