VIU Fest offers activities and learning experiences for all ages

Vancouver Island University will host its biggest community event of the year this month.

VIU Fest is a free, all-ages event featuring hands-on learning opportunities and family entertainment. It takes place Oct. 24 and will give prospective students a chance to explore the university’s programs.

There will be prizes, including up to $10,000 toward tuition and food for one student’s first year of studies.

“VIU Fest is your opportunity to learn more about Vancouver Island University and what goes on at our campus,” said Richard Horbachewski, associate vice-president of external relations. “Whether you want to sample delicious food, are looking for free fun activities for your kids, want to hear about the latest research happening in your community or are curious about VIU programming and how it can help you achieve your career goals, we’ve got something for everyone.”

The event will feature free, 30-minute class sessions including graphic design, nursing and cooking.

The trades programs will offer a chance to operate a mini excavator, get a mini manicure or hair tinsel treatment, watch sugar sculpting demonstrations and sample chocolate-dipped profiteroles.

“Most of the activities are inside, so rain or shine, we’ll have lots of things to do,” said Horbachewski. “Last year more than 4,000 community members joined us and we’re hoping for even more this year!”

Parking is free on campus all day for the event.
