RDN rolling out free transit program for students

Youth aged 13 to 18 will be able to ride public transit in the Regional District of Nanaimo for free starting next month.

The fare-free youth transit program begins Sept. 6. The RDN board approved the program in April and plans to review it after two years.

Youth aged 12 and under already ride BC Transit buses for free through the province’s Free Transit for Children 12 and Under program.

“We look forward to launching this program and seeing the difference it makes for youth and families across the region. By making transit more accessible, we can help young people get to school, work, recreation and community services more easily, which benefits the whole community,” said RDN board chair Stuart McLean.

RDN staff will hold events across the region from Aug. 17 to Sept. 6 to distribute transit passes. Passes will also be available at the RDN transit building on Hammond Bay Road.
