shíshálh Nation to host councillor by-election in February

A by-election will be held in the new year to elect a new councillor for the shíshálh Nation, and a nomination meeting is scheduled for this month.

The meeting will be held on the 19 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the shíshálh Nation Community Hall. They add that shíshálh Nation Voters who are at least 18 years old by Feb. 3 are entitled to vote for one councillor.

An all-candidates meeting will be held on Jan. 4 with advance voting set for Jan. 28. Election day will be Feb. 3, according to the Nation.

The Nation adds if your name is not on, or appears incorrectly on the Voters’ list you need to make an application to the Electoral Officer with the reasons why your name should be looked at or changed by Jan. 4.

Options are also available for those who cannot vote in person on voting day.

“Voters who are ordinarily resident on shíshálh Nation Lands and unable to vote in person due to disability on the date of the election, or voters who are not ordinarily resident on shíshálh Nation lands, may vote by mail-in ballot if they deliver a completed Application for Remote Ballot to the Electoral Officer,” said the Nation.

The election was originally set for November after councillor Shain Jackson stepped down for personal reasons.
