Homeless encampment destroyed in morning blaze

Nanaimo Fire Department says a homeless encampment has burnt to the ground after an early morning fire was set at the intersection of Comox Road and Prideaux Street.

They say the incident happened just before six this morning and the fire crews had a difficult time getting down a steep bank to extinguish the fully engulfed 50-square-foot area.

Nanaimo fire says no injuries were suffered in the blaze, but that was because no one was at the encampment when the fire broke out.

There is no word on the cause of the fire.
