Nanaimo residents urged to leave pets home in hot weather

Temperatures are expected to stay above 20 degrees in most parts of Vancouver Island, but Nanaimo RCMP is asking members of the public not to take matters into their own hands if they witness a dog, or any animal, left inside a hot car.

Retired Constable Gary O’Brien said the detachment has received a high number of calls relating to pets being left in cars and they were taken care of without having to resort to drastic measures.

“We understand, and appreciate, how the public must feel when they see an animal left unattended in a parked vehicle,” he says. “We received 13 calls for service since June 13, and all were resolved successfully without any injury to the animal or damage to any vehicle.”

According to Nanaimo RCMP calls to animal control and the SPCA will have no impact on how quick a response is given to an animal in distress because they will in turn contact the police.

Police say residents should note if the pet is in distress by noting if the animal is panting, lying down, barking or vomiting. They say it should also be noted if the vehicle is parked in a shaded area, or if there is adequate ventilation and water inside the car.

O’Brien says if people notice if the animal is shaking uncontrollably or has lost coordination it is more likely in distress and warrants the attention of RCMP.

If an animal is found in these conditions the City of Nanaimo can enforce a bylaw where the operator could receive a $500 fine and their pet may be seized.
