Members of Nanaimo’s culture and sports community were presented with prestigious awards by city council for their gold medal performances representing the city at various events throughout the province.
Councillors Thorpe, Manly and Eastmure presented approximately 20 medals and certificates to local recipients and teams for their provincial, national and international contributions from varying categories last night.
Mayor Leonard Krog says the city is proud of these individuals for their accomplishments and it goes to show what a group of people can do when they are dedicated and passionate about it.
“It makes me incredibly proud of this city, and the kind of enthusiasm these people have brought to what they have been doing,” Krog says. “This is a great little town.”
Krog says sports and culture is an important part of Nanaimo’s heritage and it is important to maintain it going forward because of the recognition it has brought to so many people.
“Nanaimo has been a sports town for a very long time,” he says. “Indigenous players from this community achieve national and international fame.”
Teams from several categories across Nanaimo gave gold medal performances such as; hockey, soccer, track and field, swimming, football, bowling, ballet, performing arts and gymnastics.

Councilor Ian Thorpe says Nanaimo has a long history of not only participating in games, but also hosting them and is looking forward to continuing the tradition.
“Nanaimo has hosted three games in the past, and we are proud to host the 55 plus games in 2025,” Thorpe says. “Our community has a history of supporting these events and has massive participation.
“There is a lot of talent in our city.”
Thorpe says recognition is key to promoting involvement in the community and providing awareness of what individuals can achieve.
“I think it really is a worthwhile endeavor that the city recognizes our athletes and cultural leaders,” he says. “I hope more people in the future learn of the program and nominate people who qualify for awards.”
