UPDATED: Crash on Nanaimo Parkway sends two to hospital in serious condition

A vehicle collision has claimed the life of a 24-year-old man after his Toyota Yaris was struck by a Dodge Caravan in the northbound lanes of the Nanaimo Parkway, near the Cedar Overpass, late Wednesday night.

Constable Gary O’Brien said in an updated media release the driver of the Yaris succumbed to his injuries in hospital and the driver of the Caravan is still receiving medical care.

O’Brien said the detachment expresses their deepest sympathies to the family.

“Our sincerest thoughts, and condolences, go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” he said.

Police and emergency services responded Wednesday night around 10 p.m., but at the time officers were unable to locate the driver of the Caravan but a police dog was brought in to help track down the 59-year-old man.

O’Brien said the crash impeded northbound traffic while investigators examined the scene.

“While only preliminary, investigators believe alcohol, amongst other factors, was a contributor to the collision,” he said.

Police are still investigating the crash and are asking anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to contact Nanaimo RCMP.
