Youth run music festival hopes to create a ‘safe space’ for young musicians

A youth-run music festival in Nanaimo is set to highlight up-and-coming bands from all over the Island on June 23rd.

The concert, called S-S-L-E-X Three runs from 12 pm to 9 pm on the 23rd of June at Sound Heritage and will highlight the talents of young musicians. Ten acts are on the lineup and will see acts like Nanaimo pop-punk group Danger Box and garage rock band Space Disco hit the stage.

Nathan Randall, co-organizer and owner of Sound Heritage says that there are very few all-ages venues in Nanaimo and that the goal of the one-day festival is to create a safe space for youth to perform and listen to great music. “There’s a ton of young talent in Nanaimo that’s being encouraged by local school music programs but there aren’t places that young people can play,” says Randall. Since a lot of venues make most of their money off alcohol sales, that creates a barrier for youth who want to perform live music.

To cover costs the event is still looking for sponsors and so far, they’ve raised a third of what they need. Anyone interested in donating can contact Sound Heritage for more information.

Admission is by donation and there will be food and merch available during the show.
