Man caught with bucket of date-rape drugs can’t appeal conviction, says judge

A man caught in Nanaimo with a literal bucket of date rape drugs has been denied an appeal of his conviction.

Justin Thomas Gary Donovan was pulled over by RCMP in Nanaimo on December 12, 2020 during early morning hours. The officer found the vehicle had been impounded months earlier, and the driver was prohibited.

While searching the vehicle police found a large, orange bucket behind the driver’s seat filled with liquid GHB, commonly known as the date rape drug, which was still steaming. Police also found methamphetamines, along with cleaning and cooking supplies, a propane burner, and four kilograms of lye.

Donovan’s lawyers tried to argue the search was unlawful but in a decision last week Justice J. Christopher Grauer disagreed, and let the previous drug trafficking convictions stand.
