Shishalh Nation gets major provincial funding to build affordable housing

$6.8 million.

That’s how much money the Province is investing in an affordable housing project for Shishalh Nation.

“I’m very pleased about this announcement,” said Nicholas Simons, the former Shishalh employee and current MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast.

“Partly because I know what the housing crisis means to the community and I think this is a big step in the right direction. Other housing availability will be impacted by this, so all around, this is good news for the Sunshine Coast.”

As a result of this funding, 34 affordable housing units are expected to be built.

Chief Warren Paull says he’s extremely happy with this funding announcement.

“The province stepped in to fill a void,” said Chief Warren Paull through a media release.

“And we’re hoping that’s a signal to the feds that they need to do more in the way of addressing the immediate needs of First Nations’ housing.”
