The Nanaimo Ladysmith School District is dealing with a $5.4 million dollar shortfall.
A 32 point plan for trimming the budget comes up for discussion at a public meeting Tuesday evening at 6pm at NDSS.
The list of money-saving options includes eliminating 25 full-time support staff jobs.
Rob Zver is President of CUPE Local 606. He says support staff are always the first to go when there’s a budget crunch, but there are other ways.
Zver says the core problem is that the province isn’t adequately funding public education. The plan also calls for cuts to teaching positions and the replacing teacher librarians in high schools with lower paid library assistants.
