Seniors can remain independent longer

Proposed changes to the Community Care and Assisted Living Act by the province mean seniors can stay in their assisted living residence longer.

Daniel Fontaine, the chief executive officer of the BC Care Providers Association says right now seniors who require certain services are expected to move from an independent living situation to a residential care home where 24 hour care is provided& ..

As it stands, seniors who require more than two of six prescribed services that may be offered in assisted living are expected to move to a residential-care home.

Those services include things like help with living activities, like eating, mobility, dressing or personal hygiene or behavioural management among others.

Amendments remove the limit on the services, allowing assisted-living residents to remain in their home-like setting.
