Halalt launches lawsuits against paper giant

The Halalt First Nation is bringing two civil lawsuits against Catalyst Paper and in one of them is seeking 2 billion dollars in damages.
That claim alleges Catalyst has illegally trespassed on, and caused damages to, the First Nation’s asserted territories and fisheries resources through the operation of Catalyst’s Crofton Mill since 1957.

A second claim was filed jointly by the Halalt First Nation, Sunvault Energy and Aboriginal Power Corporation alleging Catalyst disclosed certain confidential information pertaining to a proposed anaerobic digester facility in breach of a confidentiality agreement.

Catalyst is denying the allegations contained in both claims and intends to defend itself.
