NEDC posts small loss, but says its success isn't measured by the bottom line

The Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation finished 2014 with a bit of a deficit.

According to the annual report released at Thursday’s AGM, the City-owned corporation banked almost $1.7 million in revenues, 82% of which came from a grant from the City.

Expenses topped $1.8 million dollars, but as NEDC Secretary Treasurer Dan Kucherka explains, making money isn’t their goal.  He says their focus is driving economic development and tourism.

Tourism Nanaimo, which is part of NEDC, says 2014 was a great year for the city on that front.

Executive Director Lesley Anderson says events like the BC Games attracted thousands of people to the region last summer.

Anderson says they’re also working on new attractions, to more people to the area.  Overall Nanaimo’s various visitor information centres served almost 14,000 guests in 2014.
