HSPP adds major upgrade work to this year’s annual maintenance

Howe Sound Pulp and Paper (photo courtesy Paper Excellence) is in the middle of its annual maintenance.

And this year it includes two major capital projects.

Brent Desrocher is the Technical and Environment Manger at HSPP. He says contractors have brought in around 900 employees for upgrades to the bleaching equipment and the machinery that helps the mill recover and re-use a byproduct called “black liquor”.

This week the mill is shutting down the boiler for its regular inspections and maintenance.

Desrocher says that means low concentrations of odorous gas that usually gets incinerated will have to be vented, but they don’t expect emissions to exceed provincial limits.
