Colliery Dam committee releases first public update

With an engineering firm looking into the options for remediating Nanaimo’s Colliery dams, the technical committee has released its first comprehensive update on what they’ve been doing.

The committee, which includes members of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society, the City and the engineers Golder Associates, has been working behind closed doors.

Katherine Gordon was brought in as a facilitator, and she says the latest update includes an explanation of the committee’s mandate which she says is to find a way to keep the dams in place.

Over the next few weeks, Golder will be undertaking a risk assessment of the dams. The preliminary work will be presented to the Committee later this month.
