Domtar announces reopening of Howe Sound mill

The Howe Sound mill is set to reopen, according to Domtar.

The company said it welcomed the province’s decision to work collaboratively with the mill at a time when B.C.’s forestry sector is facing “extraordinary pressures.”

The mill, located in Port Mellon near Langdale, has approximately 400 employees who have been without work since Domtar announced in August that it was indefinitely idling operations.

Domtar said the forest industry continues to face significant economic and competitive challenges.

The company said it believes its collaboration with the province represents an important first step toward supporting a strong and sustainable future for the sector and the communities that depend on it.

Scheduled maintenance at the mill will go ahead as planned, followed by the mill’s restart.
