RCMP ask drivers to give extra travel time as kids go back to school

RCMP are reminding drivers to be mindful of children heading back to school throughout Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.

“The start of a new school year brings increased traffic and more children walking, cycling, and using scooters to get to and from school,” says Nanaimo RCMP Inspector Donovan Tait, operations officer with Nanaimo RCMP. “Every driver, cyclist and pedestrian has a role to play in keeping our roads safe. Slow down, stay alert and be especially mindful in school and playground zones. A few extra seconds of caution can help prevent a tragedy and ensure every child arrives safely at school and back home.”

In Nanaimo, officers will work with Speed Watch volunteers to conduct enforcement and education initiatives in and around school zones.

Nanaimo RCMP has a specific reminder for people riding e-scooters: they must be at least 16 years old and are designed for bicycle lanes.

Officers are also reminding parents and other drivers to expect increased traffic around schools, especially in the first week of September, and to allow extra travel time.
