Nanaimo breaks ground on new $11 million activity centre on Long Lake

The City of Nanaimo has broken ground on a new $11.4-million activity centre and boat storage facility at Long Lake.

City council members and project stakeholders gathered July 30 to mark the ceremonial start of construction.

“The new Loudon Park Activity Centre is an investment in community, recreation and inclusion. This project reflects the feedback we’ve heard from residents and will create an accessible waterfront destination where people of all ages and abilities can gather, be active and connect with nature,” said Mayor Leonard Krog. “We’re excited to celebrate this important milestone and look forward to seeing the lasting benefits this space will bring to Nanaimo.”

The project includes a bookable community space with a kitchen, training areas and boat storage for the Nanaimo Rowing Club, along with new washrooms.

The park will also receive new landscaping and a playground.

The city said two houses next to the park will be removed as part of the project. Site preparation is scheduled to begin this year, with most construction expected to be completed by 2028.
