Heat warning in effect for eastern Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast

Parts of Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast remain under a heat warning until Wednesday.

Environment Canada said a ridge of high pressure is bringing above-normal temperatures to the region, with daytime highs expected to reach the low 30s and overnight lows in the mid-teens.

The temperatures are expected to continue through Wednesday before gradually cooling Thursday.

Environment Canada said heat can affect anyone, but risks are greater for seniors, people who live alone, those with pre-existing health conditions, mental illness, substance use disorders or limited mobility.

Residents are encouraged to check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk, especially those who live alone, to make sure they have access to a cool space.

Signs of heat illness include heavy sweating, rashes, cramps, fainting, high body temperature and worsening health conditions.

Residents are encouraged to keep their homes cool by using air conditioning, blocking sunlight by closing curtains or blinds, or moving to a cooler location such as a basement or public cooling centre.
