DNBIA wins award from Canadian Urban Institute

The Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association has won a “Brownie” from the Canadian Urban Institute. The award recognizes efforts to re-habilitate so-called “brown fields”, which are areas with a history of industrial activity and potential contamination.

The DNBIA’s Terminal Corridor Revitalization Project involves property owners and the DNBIA cooperating on environmental assessments in the Terminal-Nicol corridor, a process than can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Darren Moss is Chair of the DNBIA’s Planning and Design Committee

Moss says there’s still a lot of work to do before they get to the final phase, which will involve public consultation and creating strategies to help smaller property owners
