Driver and scootering youth ticketed after collision in Nanaimo

A driver and a 15-year-old scooter rider were both ticketed after a collision in Nanaimo that left the teen injured.

Nanaimo RCMP said a commercial van was making a right turn onto Bergen-Op-Zoom Drive when it collided with the teen, who was riding a scooter on the multi-use pathway at about 2 p.m. on June 23.

“The youth fell to the ground following the collision and was treated at the scene by BCEHS for his non-life-threatening injuries,” RCMP said. “The driver remained at the scene and co-operated with the investigation.”

Police said the driver was ticketed for failing to yield to the rider. The rider was also ticketed under the Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project Regulation for failing to wear a helmet and operating an e-scooter while under the minimum age.

“This collision highlights the shared responsibility that exists between drivers and those using alternative modes of transportation,” said reserve constable Gary O’Brien, media relations officer for Nanaimo RCMP.

Police are reminding residents the minimum age to ride an e-scooter in British Columbia is 16. Helmets are mandatory and speeds cannot legally exceed 25 km/h.
