Investigators link Nanaimo blast to e-bike battery

Nanaimo RCMP said an explosion Sunday morning did not cause injuries or damage to nearby properties.

Police responded to reports of an explosion in a wooded area near the 900 block of Terminal Avenue around 8 a.m. Sunday.

Officers closed a section of Terminal Avenue to allow investigators to respond safely. Police, Nanaimo Fire Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services attended.

“Investigators located significant metal debris consistent with an explosion,” Nanaimo RCMP said in a statement. “The RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit was consulted, and RCMP Forensic Identification Services attended.”

RCMP said preliminary findings indicate the explosion was likely caused by an e-bike battery.

Terminal Avenue reopened around 10 a.m.
