New play space, outdoor classroom opens at Beban Park

Beban Park Social Centre in Nanaimo has officially opened a new outdoor classroom and play space.

Construction began last November, with an opening celebration held April 15 for the new wooden, gated play area.

“This new outdoor classroom and play space is a wonderful example of how we can thoughtfully invest in our community. By creating an inclusive, accessible environment that encourages play, learning and connection with nature, we are giving children and families a space that will be enjoyed for years to come,” said Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog.

The space includes wheelchair-accessible paths, a sports court, seating, a pergola and climbing areas.

The outdoor classroom also includes movable play features and amenities.

The city said future additions will include outdoor lighting, a chalkboard, a playhouse, wooden xylophone-style features, a storage shed and Memory Makers, a public art piece created by Tarcila Neves.

The area will be used by spring and summer camps and after-school care programs. It will also be available for rental through the Beban Park allocation clerk.
