BC Ferries shifting Powell River – Comox travellers to Nanaimo

BC Ferries is welcoming some new travellers to Departure Bay.

Because of a shut down at the Powell River and Comox terminals starting Sunday, travellers between the upper Sunshine Coast and the Island will go from Saltery Bay to Nanaimo.

BC Ferries says the arrangement won’t have a noticeable impact on traffic around the terminal, or the Nanaimo – Horseshoe Bay run.

Darin Guenette of BC Ferries says the only real change needed at the terminal was a computer upgrade for the cash register system

Guenette also says it’s too early to tell if the link to Nanaimo will end up attracting travellers from the Lower Sunshine Coast who want to bypass Horseshoe Bay.

The temporary route is expected to remain in place until early February, when the Comox terminal work is due to be finished.  Then, from February 8th to March 9th the trip will be from Saltery Bay to Little River (Comox).

BC Ferries is also chartering flights to take people who need to get from Powell River to Comox for medical appointments, or who don’t want to take a vehicle.  Reservations will be mandatory.  All the details are here.
