Oceanside Community Track opens after years of fundraising

Communities in the Oceanside area celebrated the opening of a new track that has been a goal for decades.

The Oceanside Community Track at École Ballenas Secondary School was officially opened on Sept. 12. It is a six-lane oval track and turf infield which will serve as a focal point for recreation events in the Oceanside region.

“This opening and celebration reflect the dedication, collaboration and vision of the Oceanside Community Track Association, local partners and the broader Oceanside community that the Regional District of Nanaimo is proud to be a part of. The collective efforts of many over the past 20 years have transformed a shared goal into a lasting benefit for students, athletes, and residents,” said Vanessa Craig, chair of the Regional District of Nanaimo board.

The track was funded through a partnership between the Qualicum School District, the City of Parksville, the Town of Qualicum Beach and the RDN, along with community donors.

The Qualicum School Board managed the project and contributed $500,000 to the more than $1.3 million project.

The track is open to the public outside school hours and group bookings. It can be booked through the RDN sports field and court booking on the RDN’s website.
