Vancouver Coastal Health offers safety tips for coming winter

With winter on the way, Vancouver Coastal Health has tips for how to stay safe and healthy.

In a statement, the health authority says the focus on these tips is to help you avoid injury and to practice self-care as the weather gets colder.

Emergency Physician Dr. Richard Chan says as the cold season comes, there’s an increase in both respiratory illness and injuries.

“It’s important to know when to seek help, but equally important to understand how to maintain our health to avoid getting sick or injured,” said Chan.

They say whether you’re dealing with something minor or a serious condition, getting the right care at the right place and time is very vital.

To not slip and fall, they recommend being aware of icy conditions as everyone is at risk, choosing cleared pathways, wearing footwear that won’t slip, and use either canes or walking aids.

Along with doing recreational activities, you should remain vigilant while on the road, and to keep up with your flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
