Audit-recommended mayoral apology coming next week in Sechelt

District of Sechelt council has decided to endorse six recommendations from their internal governance audit during a special closed meeting today.

According to the district, the goal of the governance audit is to make improvements which benefit and service residents in Sechelt including establishing dialogue both in and outside of council chambers.

After dysfunction between the mayor and councilors, council In February voted to request an outside firm commence a governance audit which included recommendations on a public apology by mayor John Henderson, approach to governance, strategic priorities, meeting procedures, correspondence and a governance audit.

According to the audit, a series of recommendations were made surrounding items including new directives, creation of committees, and developing appropriate guidelines on how the new governance and priorities committee model will be implemented.

Council voted to release the results of the closed meeting in June, and a draft apology by the mayor is expected to be released once it’s voted on during a July 24 council meeting.
