78 supportive homes to be open to those in need in Nanaimo

Low-income citizens could soon have access to a home, as 78 supportive homes will be open in Nanaimo early next year.

That comes from the BC Government, announcing that BC Housing are leasing all 78 homes at the Travellers Lodge on 1298 Nelson Street, with the goal of providing safe and secure housing for those in need.

Along with self-contained studio units with private bathrooms, the building also has common amenity spaces and gardens.

MLA for Nanaimo Sheila Malcolmson says they want all people to get the homes and support they need.

“Adding 78 supportive housing units at the Travellers Lodge in Nanaimo will help people build life skills and be ready for other affordable housing we’re building,” said Malcolmson.

The province says rent will be $500 a month, which includes two meals a day and laundry services. They add the residents will have access to life-skills training, employment assistance, counselling, physical and mental health resources.

They aim to give the units to those living in shelters, with a focus on those older than 19, and people who want to lower exposure to alcohol and substances.

A non-profit operator will be selected to operate the lodge, with residents expected to move in early next year.
