Stage two water restrictions are coming after drier than normal conditions, and the lack of snowpack has led to island municipalities implementing water restrictions.
The Regional District of Nanaimo, and the City of Parksville say they will move to Stage 2 water restrictions on May 1 to ensure there is adequate water supply for essential services.
The RDN says each region will handle their restrictions according to their bylaws, but getting to this state was the result of unseasonable winter conditions.
“With warmer than normal temperatures, reported snow levels at higher elevations were below average for most of the winter season,” the RDN says. “The snowpack helps store winter precipitation at elevation and contributes to streamflow and groundwater as it melts.”
The City of Parksville says implementing measures now will hopefully mitigate future restrictions.
“Taking conservation measures early, before our water supplies come under stress, is essential to ensure we can maintain adequate water supply throughout the hot dry summers we have come to expect,” they say.
