Below average snowpack could lead to early water restrictions on Sunshine Coast

With snowpack levels at record lows the SCRD says residents could expect to see water restriction implementations earlier than normal.

According to the district, they typically implement Stage 1 restrictions annually on May 1 but this year they are asking the community to start limiting water use before then before putting in restrictions.

General manager of infrastructure services Remko Rosenboom says snowpack plays an important role in replenishing water reserves, but this year conservation could be even more important.

“The melting of snowpack in early summer plays a huge role in the recharge of our water systems,” he says. “SCRD staff are doing all they can to prepare for drought conditions through the summer months.”

The SCRD says they will be mailing a chart to each resident outlining water regulations and how people can help conserve and have an adequate supply through drought conditions.

A snow survey by the district showed that snowpack levels at Edwards Lake are 49 per cent below average and Chapman Lake is 40 per cent below average
