Nanaimo SAR helps 2 lost hikers

Nanaimo Search and Rescue is reminding people that even though the days are getting longer, it still gets  dark early, and you should be prepared before heading out for a hike.

The reminder comes after SAR teams were called out Monday evening to look for 2 hikers who got disoriented on the trail system above McKeown Way as darkness fell.

Allan Tonn, Search Manager, says the women called 911 around 4:45pm to ask for help, so they sent out 15 people to help guide them to safety.  He says the pair did the right thing in calling before they got into serious trouble.

Tonn says people should carry a flashlight, and let someone know when they  expect to return from a hike.
