City of Nanaimo set to begin second AAP on January 18

The City of Nanaimo says they are going to start hosting information sessions as they bring a new alternative approval process with the hopes of gaining permission to build a $48.5 million operations centre.

This is the second AAP the city has started to build a facility after the city admitted they failed to provide proper notice to the public the first time around.

The city says three information sessions, along with public tours, will be provided to the residents of Nanaimo and they will have 34 days to oppose the borrowing bylaw.

Director of Legislative Services Sheila Gurries says she encourages everyone to come out and educate themselves on the AAP process and learn more about the project.

“Residents are invited to participate in Public Works and information sessions to learn more about the project and the AAP,” she says. “To voice opposition to the borrowing bylaw, individuals can fill out response forms at City Hall, or downloadable forms from the city’s website.”

“They must be submitted by Feb. 20, either in person or via mail to City Hall.”

A review of the first AAP was sparked after the city received a letter from Sandford Bartlett questioning the validity of the notice provided to Nanaimo residents during a council meeting on Dec. 4.

Dates for the information sessions are set for Jan. 18, 20 and 25.

The second AAP was approved by council after they voted seven to two in favor.
