Changes to transit across RDN optimize rider experience, BC Transit says

BC Transit says they are making changes to transit in Nanaimo to provide riders with more convenience and better access across the RDN.

Changes are expected to be announced this Sunday, and manager of government relations Seth Wright says the changes include a route for transit riders to access the Hullo Ferries terminal at 100 Port Way, as well as timing changes to the timing on route 70 [Nanaimo-Cowichan Express].

He says this is an easier way for people to use active transportation, but implementing these changes means some reductions on Route 25 to maximize time.

“We are optimizing route 25 by reducing part of its route that didn’t have a lot of ridership to include service between the Hullo Terminal, downtown terminal, BC Ferries, and Woodgrove Terminal,” he says.

He says part of the changes include enabling smarter travel and a move towards a more effective transit system.

“Timing changes, especially on route 70, are not an increase or decrease in the number of trips,” Wright says. “We are simply shuffling trips for the most part, so we can enable better connections if you want to travel between Nanaimo and Victoria.”

BC Transit says there will be no changes to hours, but passengers will notice an improvement when they are connecting to other routes.

The changes are expected to be announced on Jan. 7.
