Even though the holidays are supposed to be filled with cheer, there are still fraudsters who will try and spread fear.
Nanaimo RCMP says they are advising the public of a fraud scam happening across the island that has already targeted communities in West Shore, Sidney, and Victoria, with one incident hitting close to home on Dec. 15.
Police say a homeowner was approached by a company using the names Trade Right Paving, All Roads Paving and Weatherproof Roofing and Masonry. They say the offer was declined and reported to the police.
Reserve constable Gary O’Brien says in each case, victims have been taken for thousands and the work is never finished.
“Payment is expected upfront, then the work is not completed and the service they provide is sub-par at best,” he says. “They have a variety of one-star reviews from unsatisfied customers complaining of fraudulent work.”
Police say a Caucasian man with an Irish accent is suspected to be involved in the incidents with reports of four men associated with the fraud.
O’Brien says police are not strangers to these types of fraud.
“Handyman frauds are not new, and the standard ploy is to do shoddy work, demand money up front, and not complete their work,” he says.
