New Sunshine Coast long-term care centre set to receive residents

Vancouver Coastal Health says a new long-term care facility on the Sunshine Coast will provide the region with an increase in much-needed long-term care capacity.

The new Silverstone facility will have 128 beds, along with two beds identified as temporary hospice, contracted out by VCH and will replace Stonecliffe, and Totem Lodge long-term care to aid with assisted living, hospice and palliative care.

According to Vancouver Coastal Health, the facility will use a best practice model of care where several residents will live in several small “houses” within a single building with each unit being able to hold 16-17 residents. The units will house a dining room and lounge, with each resident having access to their own private ensuite washroom and shower.

They say the model of care being offered is considered the best practice when it comes to long-term care homes and enhances residents’ privacy and care.

“We recognize change can be challenging, and we are committed to keeping residents, their families and staff informed throughout this transition,” VCH said in a media release.
