Cold temperatures, along with rainy weather has the City of Nanaimo suggesting all residents prepare for winter conditions and storms.
In a media release, the city says there are several key things residents can do to make sure they are prepared once winter conditions take full effect.
“To help avoid flooding during heavy rain, or melting snow, residents are asked to clear leaves and debris from catch basins and storm drains,” the city says. “Property owners are also required to remove snow and ice from their walkways within 24 hours.”
They add using caution in parks and on the roads is vitally important because winter conditions can increase the chances of accidents and injuries.
The city says they are committed to making sure getting around Nanaimo is a priority and will endeavor to focus on keeping streets clear and maintained.
“The city’s priority is to plow and maintain priority one routes, which are emergency routes and all major roads,” they say. “Residential areas are typically plowed and maintained within 96 hours unless snow and icy conditions cause plows to divert.”
Mayor Leonard Krog says being safe and aware of conditions will benefit everyone in the city.
“Preparation is the key to weathering any storm,” he says. “By taking proactive measures around our homes, parks and on the roads, we can ensure safety and readiness in the face of unpredictable weather.”
During extreme weather, the city suggests residents stay tuned to local media outlets, and their website, for updates.
