New homes for Nanaimo seniors and people with disabilities

Sixty-two new affordable homes are now available at Nanaimo’s Sunfield Manor, for seniors and those living with disabilities.

According to a media release, the five-story facility is part of a two-phase redevelopment proposed for the one-hectare site, and tenants of the existing 30-unit facility.

Mayor Leonard Krog says affordable housing in any capacity is a step in the right direction especially now.

“This project shows that with commitment and compassion, good things can be accomplished,” Krog says. “People who might otherwise not be able to find affordable housing will have safe and secure places to live.”

According to the Canadian Rental Housing Index, rent has skyrocketed over the past five years leaving 38 per cent of renters in BC spending more than 30 per cent of their salaries on housing, while 16 per cent are spending an excess of 50 per cent of their income.

Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Sean Fraser says half of the units in the building will accommodate living wages which will allow tenants to maintain their financial freedom.

“Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home, especially our seniors who have done so much for us and deserve to retire in dignity,” he says. “Not only do these new homes provide secure housing, but they also allow residents to maintain their independence and live in the communities they help build.”

The project is part of a $19 billion housing investment by the BC government, and since 2017 the province has had more than 76,000 homes being delivered or built with 1,600 in Nanaimo.
