Commercial harvesters going back to court over Kulleet Bay geoducks

The Underwater Harvesters Association is, once again, taking the Stz’uminus First Nation to court over the geoduck fishery in Kulleet Bay.
In 2010, the UHA hit Stz’uminus with a lawsuit over a blockade that kept members from harvesting geoducks.
Executive Director Michelle James says that time, it was settled out of court.
James says Stz’uminus has violated that settlement with a protest last week, when the geoduck fishery opened, and another on Tuesday, that kep harvesters out of Kulleet Bay.
Stz’uminus says DFO isn’t properly consulting with them on the fishery in the bay, and they’re being cut out of an important resource in their traditional territory.
The suit is due up in court in September.
