Rezoning application to permit 32-storey Hilton Hotel

A rezoning application necessary for a Hilton Hotel proposal for Nanaimo to become a reality will come before Nanaimo City Council on Monday night.

The properties at 10 and 25 Front St are properly zoned for a hotel, but not for the size being proposed by Stantec. The architecture firm needs the height and density specifications amended to accommodate a 32-storey Hilton.

Bruce Anderson, Nanaimo’s Planning and Design Manager, says the hotel development has two other components council will have to consider.

Anderson says those two items are considered key for the hotel proposal to move forward, if the site-specific rezoning application gets approval.

If the City gives the rezoning application the green light, it’ll have to go to a public hearing and then come back for a final reading. At that point, the hotel developer would be able to go after a development permit for the Hilton.
