Man Stabbed Deemed Aggressor and Arrested in Nanaimo

A man was arrested after being stabbed in an altercation in downtown Nanaimo.

Police initially thought that he was the victim of a stabbing, but after seeing security camera footage, determined that he was in fact the aggressor – having initiated the situation.

Constable Gary O’Brien says, “Based on the evidence obtained to date, investigators believe the accused, who has mental health issues, initiated an unprovoked attack on a marginalized person of no fixed address.”

The incident happened near the Dollarama on Fifth St. and Bruce Ave. at around 4:15 am Thursday morning. The 32 year old aggressor was stabbed after attacking someone experiencing homelessness. He then made his way to the nearby 7-11 where he asked a bystander for help.

BC Paramedics attended the scene and transported him to hospital where he was treated and released for his injuries.

RCMP then reviewed the security camera footage and made their way to the man’s home where they arrested him for assault with a weapon.

The victim of the attack has been identified by police and has not needed any medical attention.
