ICF remains optimistic 2014 will see return of train service
Work to get passenger trains rolling again on Vancouver Island is continuing, but it’s not moving along as quickly as hoped.
The Island Corridor Foundation expected to have a deal in place by now.
ICF Chair Mary Ashley says they’re confident it will come through this year.
She says the operator, Southern Rail, and VIA Rail are talking again, which is a big step in the right direction.
Ashley says one sticking point has been the condition of the E&N Line. Another has reportedly been VIA’s concern over the size of the deficit they’d have to run to provide the service.
The ICF has $20-million in funding for track and trestle upgrades promised by the local, provincial and federal governments, but it hinges on getting that deal with VIA.
