Be cautious with cigarette butts

With an open burning ban now in place for the Coastal Fire Centre, Nanaimo Fire Rescue is also reminding people to be careful with their cigarette butts.

NFR Chief Fire Prevention Officer Ennis Mond says discarded cigarette butts can easily start a fire, especially when tossed on top of bark mulch.

Mond says they’re also reminding Nanaimo residents that campfires and cooking fires are banned, but BBQs and propane fueled stoves are okay. Anyone not following the rules could get a $200 ticket.
