A Sechelt councillor known for some “outside the box” thinking says the reaction he gets is a big factor in his decision not to seek re-election.
Doug Hockley made the comments Wednesday during a committee meeting where they were looking at three proposals he put forward for downtown beautification: Welcoming arches, life-sized wildlife sculptures in various spots around town, and renovating the largely unused tower at Municipal Hall to look like a lighthouse.
The sculpture idea, in particular, sparked a flurry of e-mails from critics.
Councillor Chris Moore and Mayor John Henderson spoke out against what they’re calling the “disrespectful” tone of those e-mails, and Hockley says situations like this have cooled his interest in running.
Hockley’s proposals, meanwhile, are being referred to the Downtown Revitalization Committee and the District’s Arts Coordinator before coming back to Council.
