DND makes progress on plane crash mystery

The Department of National Defense is working to fill in the details after wreckage of a World War II military plane was found in the Cowichan Lake area.

A logging crew doing survey work made the discovery in late October outside Port Renfrew, but the exact location has not been released.

DND says the plane is an Avro Anson that went down 71 years ago while out on navigational exercises.

Laurel Clegg, a DND Casualty ID Coordinator, says there was a crew of 4 on board at the time and they were never accounted for.

She says the plane is difficult to get to so officials don’t yet know if their remains are with the aircraft.  It’s also possible they bailed out before the crash, or if they survived they may have walked away but then died nearby.

Clegg says a team will return in the spring when they can get better access to the aircraft.
